Land Acknowledgement
We honour the land that we are on, which has been the site of human activity since time immemorial. It is the traditional territories of the Wendat, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Anishinaabe, the Chippewa, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River First Nations. Ontario is covered by 46 treaties and other agreements, and is home to many Indigenous Nations from across Turtle Island, including the Inuit and the Metis. These treaties and other agreements, including the One Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, are agreements to peaceably share and care for the land and its resources. Other Indigenous Nations, Europeans, and newcomers, were invited into this covenant in the spirit of respect, peace, and friendship. We are all treaty people. Many of us, have come here as settlers, immigrants, newcomers in this generation or generations past. We are mindful of broken covenants and we strive to make this right, with the land and with each other. I would also like to acknowledge those of us who came here involuntarily, particularly as a result of the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade. And so, we honour and pay tribute to the ancestors of African Origin and Descent.

A Message From
President/CEO and Board Chair

Scarborough is now one of the most diverse communities in the GTA—a gorgeous mosaic of ethnic, religious, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds—and the need for culturally appropriate care for newcomers and racialized communities adds layers of complexity. SCHC has long met that challenge with our own mosaic of community supports and programs for Scarborough residents of all ages, races, abilities and genders, a multifaceted yet holistic approach guided by our vision of “Igniting the strength of our community.”
SCHC is proud of our record and standard of excellence despite the challenges – the rapid growth in population, our community members’ needs becoming increasingly complex, and the current socio-economic pressures.
To ensure our community can continue to prosper, SCHC intends to build a more sustainable way going forward. We achieve this by:
1) building on our client-centred approach, co-designing with our community as a key principle
2) developing partnerships with like-minded organizations to amplify our collective impact
3) strengthening our capacity by investing in our staff and volunteers
4) advocating for our communities especially equity-deserving groups.
Together, we will continue to find new opportunities to serve and embolden our various communities and achieve our vision of a stronger, healthier Scarborough.
With gratitude,
Jeanie Argiropoulos Atiqa Mohammad
President & CEO Chair, Board of Directors
